Five Questions: Abigail Holt

Welcome to MyOrthodoxFamily.com! Tell us who you are.

Hi! My name is Abigail. I’m a wife, mother of three little girls, and distracted artist. Art is an outlet I’ve decided to make space for in my life… creating helps me make sense of the things that are most important to me.

What do you most enjoy sharing? What do you feel most called to share?

I enjoy sharing the creative process behind my art. It’s a balance, of wanting to show something beautiful but being okay with the process and vulnerable enough to share that.

The world of social media is complex. What do you see as difficult and as redemptive about sharing your journey in this way?

Whew. I’ve got complicated feelings about social media. I think I always will. I try to set boundaries for my media intake, otherwise I start to feel frazzled.

What keeps me on Instagram is the ability to connect with others who are inspired by faith and creativity. It’s a way for me to document my artistic journey, to watch others share pieces of their world, and to dialogue about ideas and interests.

What is your earliest, distinctly Orthodox memory?

We converted when I was very young… into a Romanian Orthodox Church. On the right side there was a large icon of St. George and the dragon. The dragon was green, and its tail curved round the horse’s foot. I didn’t understand a lot what was going on in the liturgy, but I had this mesmerizing icon to look at each Sunday. St. George has been a constant in my life since then. (My husband and I met in St. George’s Chapel, and we named our third baby Georgia with him as her patron.)

What do you hope will be the mark you leave on the world as you pass through it?

I pray that I can lead a peaceful and honest life. I don’t think a lot about what I’ll leave behind, my biggest hope is to just be with my family… all together with Christ.
